SMK’s chairman says party will not campaign as opposite of SNS

The opposition ethnic-Hungarian SMK party will not present itself as the polar opposite of the co-ruling Slovak National Party (SNS), SMK chairman Pál Csáky told the TASR newswire. “We [SMK], as a member of the European People's Party (EPP) caucus along with SDKÚ and KDH, are interested in winning more seats than [governing-coalition party] Smer, which means to show that the Slovak Right is more powerful than the Left,” said Csáky at the SMK Republic Council in Rožňava on May 16.

The SMK chairman also reacted to Hungarian FIDESZ party leader Viktor Orban's recent statements that he [Orban] will support ethnic-Hungarians residing in neighbouring countries in advancing their efforts to gain autonomy.

“When it comes to Orban's statements, he has a chance to win the parliamentary election in Hungary. We'll meet him regularly as an EPP vice-chairman and we're looking forward to cooperation with him as the possible next Hungarian premier,” said Csáky, as quoted by TASR. TASR
