THE RETAIL price of cigarettes is on the rise. If a revised tax law passes, the price of a standard 20-pack carton should go up Sk11 as of January 2006, the SITA news agency wrote.
The planned price increase is part of the revised Excise Tax Law, which the Finance Ministry has submitted for interdepartmental review.
Higher cigarette prices would generate Sk960 million in additional tax revenue, provided consumption levels remain the same. The ministry admits, however, that higher prices may reduce the demand for cigarettes.
