Smuggled cigarettes seized

CUSTOMS officers in the Prešov region intercepted over 17.5 million packets of smuggled cigarettes on December 11. With a market value of Sk46.3 million (€1.16 million), it is the largest such haul in Slovakia, according to the daily SME.

Magdaléna Fečová of Prešov police headquarters said that if the smugglers had been able to sell the cigarettes the state would have lost Sk34.8 million (€880,000) in excise taxes.

Customs officers intercepted the vehicles carrying the cartons of Super Kings and Sovereign Classic cigarettes near the village of Vyšný Komárnik on the border with Poland.
