THE RULING Slovak National Party (SNS) is dissatisfied with its lack of influence in central state security bodies and is demanding that it be given the right to nominate candidates to the secret service and the National Security Bureau (NBÚ).
The SNS, which gave up its right to nominate a deputy director to the Slovak Information Service (SIS) some time ago, now says that the situation has changed, given that another ruling coalition party, the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), has been given the right to nominate a candidate as deputy director of the SIS.
The HZDS is believed to be considering putting forward Juraj Zábojník, the former bodyguard of party leader Vladimír Mečiar, for the post.
The SNS has also laid claim to a nominee in the NBÚ, which is in charge of vetting people before issuing authorizations to handle classified material.
“It is logical that if there are two deputy directors in the SIS, there should also be two in the NBÚ,” said SNS Deputy Chairman Juraj Pučík.
