Representatives of the Slovak government have started discussions about a draft amendment to the Labour Code with representatives of employers and trade unions.
The Social Partnership Council has so far dealt only with one point of the draft revision of the Labour Code, which is a proposal for a new definition of ‘dependent work’.
"We came to the conclusion that we have not agreed on this point,” Labour Minister Viera Tomanová said about preliminary results of the tripartite meeting.
The vice-president of the National Union of Employers (RÚZ), Juraj Špirko, said that the new definition of dependent work would force some tradesmen to become employees of the company instead of contractors and as a result their personal income would decrease. The council will continue to discuss other points of the draft revision of the Labour Code.
On March 19, representatives of the RÚZ and the Slovak Association of Employers met with representatives of the opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union party over an amendment to the Labour Code drafted by the ruling party, Smer. RÚZ deputy chairman Marián Jusko reported that they discussed the negative impact of the draft amendment to the Labour Code on further economical development, especially for the self-employed. Employers still plan to meet with other parliamentary parties to discuss the issue.
