A SOCIAL worker has been sent to jail for accepting a Sk200,000 ($4,000) bribe.

Ján. S, head of social homes in the district of Horné Obdokovy, allegedly took the massive bribe to ensure a place for a mentally ill man in a welfare home.

Ján S. has been remanded in custody in Leopoldov prison. Although he has yet to be sentenced his employers have already dismissed him and say he has "lost our trust".

They are also predicting further checks and control measures will see other managers of social services dismissed for similar practices.

"I would expect that after these checks we will see other dismissals," said Peter Missík, director of the Nitra Regional Administration.

Among new controls on placement of people in social homes will be a system of individual reviews of applications.
