Spanish firm to take part in reconstruction of Bohunice V2 nuclear power plant

Slovakia's dominant power producer, Slovenské Elektrárne, a.s. (SE), has announced that a Spanish company will participate in the reconstruction of the V2 Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant. The company Iberdola Ingenieria y Construccion will carry out the reconstruction of steam separators and re-heaters in V2 for SE, the owner of the two reactors of the V2 nuclear power station. SE informed the SITA newswire that the overall value of the order is €12.469 million (Sk413.894 million). SE signed the contract with the Spanish company in early July 2008. SE will start increasing the output of the V2’s two reactors in Jaslovské Bohunice this year. "We are going to modernise and increase the output of one steam turbine, electric energy generators and transformers," said the deputy director of the SE investment section, Gian Luca Noferi. Output of the V2 nuclear power station will thus grow from its current 880 MW to about 1,000 MW.

Reconstruction of the V2 nuclear power station will require investment of Sk9.9 billion and should be completed in 2010. SE has already raised the output of the first and second reactors of the Mochovce nuclear power station (EMO) to 107 percent of their nominal capacity this year. "We are increasing output of the reactor in the V2 power station from 100 percent to 107 percent, and we plan wider and more significant modifications. This will also be reflected in the maximum reachable electrical output. In Mochovce, the maximum reachable output has been increased to 470 MW for each reactor. In Bohunice it will be a bit less than 500 MW per reactor," added Noferi. SE is thus trying to alleviate the negative impact on energy self-sufficiency of Slovakia from the decommissioning of the first and second units of the V1 nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice. Annual electricity output in Slovakia reached more than 31.2 terawatt hours in 2006. However, after the decommissioning of the V1 nuclear power plant electricity output will decrease by 5 to 6 terawatt hours. SITA
