THE SPEAKER of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, visited Slovakia on November 17-18 to attend the official celebrations marking the Velvet Revolution organised by the Slovak speaker of parliament, Pavol Paška, and to meet Prime Minister Robert Fico, the TASR newswire reported.
Fico and Buzek discussed Slovakia’s State Language Act and Buzek said that it is important for the Slovak government to maintain ongoing dialogues with its minorities.
“We have always had an interest in respecting human and minority rights,” Buzek said, as quoted by TASR, adding that Slovakia can fully rely on the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe for help in this respect.
“It’s important to ensure the right application of the law in practice,” Buzek said about the language act.
Fico informed Buzek about his discussions with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin regarding natural gas supplies which he held two days earlier. Buzek and Fico also talked about military operations in Afghanistan and the upcoming climate conference in Copenhagen, TASR reported.
