Specialists blast away part of collapsed bridge in eastern Slovakia

Specialists on Thursday, November 15, succeeded – at their second attempt – in blasting away the damaged section of a highway bridge under construction in eastern Slovakia that collapsed on November 2, killing four workers and injuring 12 more. The team of specialists had attempted to blow up part of the bridge on Tuesday, but failed.

"The upper part [of the bridge] was lifted up [by the blast], but it didn't collapse - everything remained in place. It withstood quite a strong blast," an eyewitness told the TASR newswire on Tuesday.

"The blast was organised by the constructor, in co-operation with the police investigator, to make sure that evidence [of the collapse] isn't destroyed," Transport Ministry spokesman Martin Kóňa told TASR.
