ONE of the biggest attractions in Slovakia, the impressive Spiš Castle, is again open for tourists. Because of the mild, short winter and increased demand by tourists, the Spiš Museum in Levoča reopened the castle on March 1, almost two months ahead of plan.
So far, tourists will not be able to view the castle's exhibition halls or chapel, although the observatory tower will be accessible, Dáša Uharčeková Pavúková from the Spiš Museum told the SITA newswire.
Spiš Castle will be open daily from 10:00 to 16:00, and, as expert tour guides are not yet available, visitors will pay only half the usual entrance fee. The castle may be closed or opening hours changed in the event of bad weather.
The castle will also be open during the Easter holidays. The official opening of the summer season, including exhibits, will be held on the first weekend in May, as is traditional.
Spiš Castle is among the most popular in Slovakia. Last year, almost 169,000 people visited it.
Ľubovniansky Castle in Stará Ľubovňa is also currently open to the public, and in contrast to Spiš Castle, is open year round. Last year, Ľubovniansky Castle was visited by almost 92,000 tourists. Its official opening will take place on the last Sunday in April.
