Reducing the number of road accidents is the main goal of the Slovak police force in 2011, said Police Corps President Jaroslav Spišiak at a press conference on Tuesday, February 22. He said that if the police did not meet their goals for this year he would resign.
“I have an ambition to gain people’s support by informing them in advance about the goals that I’ve set,” Spišiak said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. He said most importance could be placed on goals concerning traffic, followed by crimes that affect people’s lives and health. Spišiak said he wants the number of road accidents to be 5,000 lower than in 2010, when 16,595 were reported.
A total of 89 murders were reported in Slovakia last year. “We may patrol the streets as best we can, but probably there will be some murders anyway,” said Spišiak, adding that another objective is to increase the number of solved murder cases by 10 percent.
