Superliga fourth round completed
The much-anticipated match between Bratislava's two premiere league teams, Inter and Slovan, ended August 15 in a 1-1 draw. Inter's Marián Ľalík scored in the 12th minute for the visitors before Slovan's Jozef Majoroš notched the equalizer in the 52nd minute. Slovan is in fourth place with 8 points while Inter is in the middle of the 16 team pack with a disappointing 5 points.
Upstart Ružomberok remained in the top slot this weekend with ten points after their 1-0 victory over Senec. After qualifying for the Superliga two seasons ago, the team has never placed higher than seventh in the league. Against Senec, Eduard Mydliar scored the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute.
Tied for first with Ružomberok is Trnava, also with ten points after four matches. Trnava won a nail biter at home 1-0 over Nitra in front of almost 9,000 spectators. Trnava scored the game winner in the 70th minute off the foot of R-bert Formanko.
Third place Košice handled hapless Dunajska Streda a 2-1 loss behind a 22nd minute penalty shot by Vladimír Janočko and a 40th minute game-winner by Peter Dzúrik. Dunajska Streda has only one point this year and has been outscored by 7 goals.
In other action, Petržalka routed Dubnica at home 4-1 behind 2 goals by Štefan Maixner. Trenčín defeated Humenne by the same 4-1 score, aided by a Miroslav Sečen own-goal at the beginning of the second half which broke a 1-1 tie.
Slovak Baseball Federation playoffs
The Slovak Baseball Federation playoffs will begin on Wedensday, September 1. Four teams will compete in the first round, including the Bratislava Oaks, who did not officially take part in the league's first division. The Oaks will play ŠK Felo, who finished fourth in the league with a 5-11 record. The other first round match-up pits the third-seeded Fighting Flies (11-5) against last place Apollo (1-15). The first round is a best of three series with games 2 and 3 scheduled for September 4 and 5. Games 1 and 3 of Felo vs. the Oaks will be played at Čierna Voda with Game 2 at Kalinčiaková field. Fighting Flies and Apollo play on the same days at the opposite fields.
Slovak junior team resumes European competition
The Slovak Under-21 football team will resume their quest to qualify for next year's European Championships when they square off against Romania on September 4 at ŠKP Stadium in Dúbravka. After six qualifying matches, Slovakia is in first place with 13 points followed by Romania (11 points), Portugal (8), Azerbaijan (4) and Hungary (3).
According to tournament rules, the top two teams will advance to next year's European Championships. After Slovakia's home match against Romania, the team will travel to Azerbaijan in October to conclude the tournament. If the Slovaks qualify for the European Championships, which appears likely, they will need to finish in the top five of the tournament to qualify for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
