THE CASE of the missing secret agent file of Slovak ice hockey federation boss Juraj Široký has been referred to police for investigation, but not before three other spy files were discovered missing as well.
The National Memory Institute, which administers the files of Slovakia’s communist-era ŠtB secret police, says it has no idea how the documents came to be lost, only that they were among 17 case files requested by Institute president Ján Langoš before he was killed in a car crash in August. Twelve of those files have been found in Langoš’ former office.
The Široký had been ready for publication several months before June elections, but Institute officials now speculate that Langoš had not wanted to embarrass Široký, who has close ties to the ruling coalition Smer party, or risk being accused of playing politics.
The matter is also to be taken up by the parliamentary Human Rights Committee.
