Tourists to Slovakia most often visit the High Tatras and the Spiš area (Prešov region), Košice and Bratislava, it was reported on February 18 based on information from official Slovak Statistics Office data.
The statistics, however, are not exact, as they only register tourists staying for at least one night in hotels and guest houses, the TASR newswire wrote. The Slovak Association of Travel Guides (SSSCR) pointed this out at a press conference in Bratislava on February 18 organised on the occasion of the World Guide Day (coming up on February 21).
SSSCR Chairman Marian Bilačič said that while there were enough guides in big towns, certain areas of interest, such as the Gemer area in Košice region, needed more guides. However, they should have the requested qualifications and certification for guiding tourists. Bilačič noted that guides were also wanted in spa locations, the mountains and big towns and cities. According to him, guiding is often provided by people who aren't certified, but the SSSCR is not against such a practice, as it supports free competition on the market. TASR
