After years of reconstruction, the Stará Tržnica building on downtown Bratislava's SNP square may finally be ready to open at the end of September.

Pavol Minárik, Bratislava's Deputy Mayor, said in an early September interview with the bi-weekly paper Staromestské Noviny that the old market building's new elevators and escalators had been fitted, its kiosks and interior finished, and its environs paved. By the end of the month, he said, the city would be ready to throw a market-warming party for the long-awaited renovations.

Minárik could not say exactly which retail firms would have boutiques or kiosks in Stará Tržnica, but he stressed that interest was very high among retailers for space on all three levels of the building.

He added that the "ugly frontage" in front of the old market building would be replaced by benches, garbage cans, a fountain and street lighting.
