ACCORDING to a report on reimbursements for the victims of communism, the Slovak Republic has so far paid compensations reaching Sk1.3 billion (€32.4 million) to the victims of the totalitarian regime.
The compensations were in response to more than 37,000 requests from people who had been persecuted, jailed, or had their property confiscated under the communist regime, the private news agency SITA wrote.
Between 1992 and 2003 the Finance Ministry released Sk308 million (€7.7 million) to reimburse 1,355 people.
The Defence Ministry compensated 52 individuals who suffered health damages or died in military forced labour camps, paying Sk702,000 (€17,000).
Out-of-court reimbursements came to Sk11.5 million (€286,200) for 14,000 people who were expatriated during the communist regime.
The Justice Ministry reimbursed 19,920 applicants whose claims amounted to Sk862 million (€21.5 million). Through the social insurer SP, one-off contributions totalling Sk98 million (€2.4 million) were paid.
