Among Slovaks living abroad, the biggest state financial support goes to those in Serbia. A report on state policy in connection to Slovaks living abroad reported that in 2012, the Office for Slovaks Living Abroad (ÚSŽZ) allocated about €1.12 million.
Out of this amount, almost €388,000 went to Slovaks in Serbia, followed by Slovaks in Romania (almost €130,000), in the Czech Republic (€124,000) and in Hungary (€93,000). The ÚSŽZ estimates the number of Slovaks living in Serbia at 52,000; those living in Romania at 25,000; in the Czech Republic about 350,000-400,000 and in Hungary about 100,000.
“The state support for Slovaks living abroad is focused on education, research and science, culture, information and media,” the SITA newswire quoted from the report July 30. “This support develops and boosts the language, cultural and national identity of Slovaks living abroad to the full extent.”
