On March 31, the Hodspodárske Noviny economic daily wrote that the conflict between the state and the Italian power company Enel is heating up.

Representatives of the ruling coalition attacked the sale of two-thirds of Slovenské Elektrárne’s (SE) shares to the Italian investor in 2006. But Prime Minister Robert Fico suggested during a recent interview on Slovak Radio that the resolution to the case could lie in issue of the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros waterworks.

The Gabčíkovo dam ended up in Enel’s hands as part of the SE privatisation, but the company only rents it.

Therefore, the current government is going to try to gain control by taking the investor to court. Slovak National Party (SNS) chairman Ján Slota has also recently mentioned Gabčíkovo to say the coalition is carefully scrutinising the contract because it believes Enel owes the country billions more.
