The Slovak Foreign Ministry is studying a draft amendment to Hungary’s controversial status law that would bring the measure into line with European standards. Budapest has promised to change the law this year.

The law, passed by the Hungarian parliament in 2001, offers cultural and educational advantages to ethnic Hungarians living in neighbouring countries, something Slovakia and Rumania have criticised as interfering in their sovereignty over their own citizens.
