THE EUROPEAN Court for Human Rights (ECHR) launched hearings in the case of a Roma woman from Slovakia who claims she was sterilised against her will due to her ethnic origin, the SITA newswire reported.
The 30-year-old woman took the Slovak government to the ECHR after she was allegedly illegally sterilised in a hospital after her second child was born in 2000.
The ECHR dealt with the case of eight sterilised Roma women from Slovakia in 2010 and ruled that their rights had been violated because they were not given access to their medical documentation. Each of the women received compensation of €3,500.
