THOUSANDS of secondary school students across Slovakia called for Education Minister Martin Fronc to resign in a national protest on April 20.

The demonstrations came as a result of problems in this year's school leaving examinations as well as because of the new system of leaving exams as a whole, the SME daily reported.

The minister, however, is not considering leaving the post and the senior political body, the Coalition council, admitted yesterday that he has a right to decide about the exams because the area falls under his constitutional competence.

A total of 2,714 students have to take the exam in Maths again because some of them were given the tests with the correct answers at the first sitting. The mistake took place at the state pedagogical institute (ŠPÚ) and Fronc has already fired several people over the affair.
