Members of the Student Council of Slovak Universities called on relevant bodies of the public administration to launch a thorough investigation into the way in which Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) chairman Ján Figeľ was awarded his PhD academic degree, and to take subsequent action against the university that granted it, the TASR newswire reported on August 11.
“Also, we call upon MP Figeľ to take a responsible approach to the issue, as situations of this kind significantly degrade the value of university diplomas in Slovakia,” said Katarína Stoláriková, chair of the student council, as quoted by TASR.
Last week, the Sme daily reported that Figeľ was awarded his doctorate via preferential treatment since he had served as a European commissioner at that time. Although he studied a programme of social work, the thesis he submitted was a copy of his book written about Slovakia’s integration into the European Union.
Moreover, Sme wrote that one member of the commission was Jozef Mikloško Jr., son of one of the founding members of KDH.
