Secondary school students will not have to pay a €15 fee to play music at their school-leaving balls following an announcement by Culture Minister Marek Maďarič. He rejected a proposal by the SOZA copyright protection organisation to charge the fee, the Sme daily reported.
Earlier in the week the current head of SOZA Vladimír Repčík wrote in a blog posting that students cannot use music protected by copyright at school-leaving parties without paying the charge.
“The licence, worth €15 for the whole event, will certainly not ruin a school-leaving ball,” wrote Repčík, as quoted by Sme.
The statement later went viral and attracted criticism.
After Maďarič said that students should not have to pay the fee since school-leaving balls are not public cultural events, SOZA announced it would not seek to charge it.
