The Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party supports the euro in that it represents a continuation of the European unification project, SaS leader Richard Sulík said on Thursday, November 17.
"A unilateral opt-out by a small open economy such as Slovakia's from the eurozone is not an option for us," he added, as quoted by the TASR newswire. Sulík said that his party aims for Slovakia to be a free and confident country in a strong European Union. The current crisis in the eurozone is not a crisis of the euro, he said.
"The crisis was brought about by fiscal irresponsibility by some of the eurozone's members. The inability of some countries to adhere to the rules of responsible management has become a burden that is dragging down all other members of this elite club," he opined.
It was Sulík's party that refused to vote in favour of increasing the eurozone's EFSF bailout fund in parliament in October, a move which helped bring down the Iveta Radičová government of which SaS was a part.
