INTENSE competition between supermarket chains led to lower prices during February, according to the daily Pravda.
Compared to February last year the decrease represents an average price drop of Sk1.60 on each item.
Analysts say that average prices usually go up in winter, due more expensive fruit and vegetables. However, in February at least, a drop in the prices of meat, milk and bread compensated for this increase.
Mária Fehérová, analyst with the Slovenská Sporitelňa bank, said: "The entry of a new supermarket chain [Lidl] played an important role in setting food prices."
