The Slovak labour market has become increasingly interested in candidates who speak at least one foreign language, according to a survey carried out by website kariera.sk that was published on Monday, October 29. Around half of the job vacancies published on the site include the requirement of one foreign language or more, with English the most sought-after (63 percent), the TASR newswire wrote.
German is the second most requested foreign language with 21 percent of vacancies listing it as a requirement. Hungarian is third, although it even precedes German in Nitra and Trnava Regions [where a considerable ethnic-Hungarian community lives - ed. note]. Next comes Russian. "Knowledge of a foreign language is required especially at branches of foreign companies, most of which are located in Bratislava Region. It's interesting that even exotic languages appear among the conditions. This refers especially to Asian languages, but also some Slavic languages," said Katarína Zemanová from the website.
