Slovaks trust the euro and the European Union, notwithstanding scepticism that has recently been reported in the media, according to a survey carried out by the TNS Slovakia agency that was released on March 16, the TASR newswire reported.
The survey found that almost three-quarters (71.4 percent) of Slovaks believe in the future of the euro while 10 percent of the respondents said they absolutely trust the euro. The remaining respondents do not have much faith in the euro and this group consisted mostly of young people under 30, women and inhabitants of smaller villages.
Some two-thirds of respondents (64.9 percent) expressed trust in the EU while one-third of Slovaks do not trust the EU, the TASR newswire wrote based on the survey, with young people under 30, women, people from small villages, students, childless respondents and people who said they do not care about economic and financial issues among those who do not trust the EU.
Most of respondents also said the introduction of the euro brought more benefit than harm to Slovakia, with 37.1 percent thinking the opposite. Almost one-fifth of people (19.4%) said they had purchased real estate or land as a precaution against a possible collapse of the euro. The survey was conducted in February 2012 among a sample of 977 respondents older than 15.
