Survey: Slovakia third worst in EU28 for corruption

A poll by global accountancy firm Ernst and Young suggests that Slovakia is the third-most corrupt country in the soon-to-expand European Union. Slovenia was ranked the most corrupt country in Europe, followed by Croatia, which will formally join the union in July, and then Slovakia and Greece in joint third place.

The poll, conducted among 3,459 respondents in 36 countries worldwide – 20 of them in Europe – was quoted by Slovakia’s Sme daily. Questions in the poll concerned issues like offering bribes and knowingly overstating the financial situation of companies.

Slovenian respondents opined that corruption and bribery are in common in 96 percent of the country’s economic life; 90 percent said the same in Croatia, and 84 percent in Slovakia and Greece.
