Most Slovaks and Czechs oppose the construction of minarets in their respective countries, according to a public opinion poll conducted by the Network Media Service (NMS) agency whose results were released on Wednesday, December 16.
As many as 56 percent of those questioned in Slovakia and 54 percent of respondents in the Czech Republic opposed minarets, the TASR newswire wrote.
A single small mosque in Brno currently serves the Muslim community in the Czech Republic. Plans to construct another place of worship for Muslims were heavily criticised recently by the Czech Christian Democrats. The Islamic community in Slovakia has bought a plot in Bratislava on which it wants to build a mosque, but it has yet to receive a construction permit. The poll results follow a referendum in Switzerland in which people voted in favour of a ban on the building of minarets.
