MY WIFE and I have New Zealand and British citizenship and are currently living in Slovakia. My wife is going to have a baby and has decided to deliver it in Austria. What needs to be done to bring the baby back to Slovakia once it is born?
To apply for a British passport for your baby follow this procedure. Once your baby is born you will be issued with an Austrian birth certificate. You can then apply for a British passport at the British Embassy in Vienna (www.british-embassy.at).
You will need the following documents too make the application:
- Birth certificates for you, your wife and your baby
- Marriage Certificate
- Yours and your wife's passports
- A completed consular birth registration form
- Two passport-size photographs of your baby
- The registration fee for the application.
The British Embassy will then issue the passport within five days and the baby can legally travel back to Slovakia. If you need it, you can apply for a British birth certificate for your baby from the British Embassy in Slovakia.
To apply for a New Zealand passport for your baby you must either mail the documentation to New Zealand or to the nearest New Zealand Embassy, which is in Germany {nzemba-ssy.berlin@tonline.de)
The process of registration for citizenship by descent for a child born overseas requires the following documentation:
- A birth certificate for the baby and the parent who has New Zealand citizenship
- Marriage Certificate
- A completed Proof of Identity form
- A completed application form.
