I AM a UK citizen and will soon be coming to live in Slovakia. I would like to bring my car with me but first want to find out if there are any special documents I should get and how much registration will cost.
To register your car in Slovakia, make sure you have all the documents necessary (see below). You must also first have a residency permit.
All the documents you use must be either original or notarized copies. The documents you must have are:
- Original Car Title (document with technical information about your car).
- Document proving that your car has been deregistered in the country of origin (or that it was bought to be exported).
- If a new car was sold to be exported, you need a receipt proving that you have paid the tax at the Slovak Tax Office or in the country of origin. This applies only to EU countries.
- A verified invoice or other evidence that you are the owner of the car.
- A Slovak ID card showing permanent residence in Slovakia (or a residency permit).
- Certificate of conformity (document showing that the car was made for the EU market, usually issued by the seller in the exporting country). This is something new and you may have problems getting this document for an older car. Make sure you get this document first to avoid further problems.
- After gathering all these documents you must have all the foreign-language documents officially translated into Slovak and then you can register your car.
Costs for this may vary depending on the age of the car and on the number of pages that have to be translated into Slovak. To give you some idea though, you will have to pay the following fees:
Initial Car Registration, Sk2000 (in official stamps); Technical Check, Sk2200; Licence Plates, Sk2000 (in official stamps); Recycling Fund, Sk3000 (must be paid for every car that is brought to Slovakia from another country). Apart from these costs you must also add the cost of car insurance.
