Two bottles containing an as-yet unidentified liquid were thrown into the Slovak Embassy in the Hungarian capital Budapest during the night of August 25/26.
“Due to the facts investigated so far, these could have [contained] flammable contents: a so-called Molotov cocktail,” spokesman of the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry Peter Stano told the TASR. He added that fortunately the bottles did not ignite, and caused minimal material damage. Nobody was hurt. The incident is being investigated by the Hungarian police. “We are worried by this incident but view it as an isolated crime,” Stano added.
Slovak-Hungarian relations recently worsened after the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry on August 21 handed over a diplomatic note to Hungarian diplomats denying Hungary’s President László Sólyom entry to Slovak territory, based on what it said were due legal regulations of the EU and Slovakia. Sólyom had been invited to the southern Slovak town of Komárno to take part in the unveiling of a statue of Hungarian King Stephen I. No Slovak official representative was invited to the ceremony.
