The Special Prosecutor’s Office has filed a lawsuit against businessman Martin Novotný, who was aide of former Prime Minister Iveta Radičová in the Osrblie corruption case. Former diplomat Igor Liška has also been charged in the case. It took eight months for the prosecutor to conclude the case in which two other businessmen have also been charged, the Sme daily wrote in its Thursday, December 20, issue.
Novotný and Liška are suspected of having accepted a bribe of €30,000 from the businessmen for arranging a subsidy worth €300,000 for the completion of the Osrblie biathlon center. In total, €1.6 million was allotted for the reconstruction and re-furbishing of the National Sports Complex in Osrblie from the ministry of education (which also has sport under its remit), finances and the prime minister’s finances. Liška, the former Slovak Ambassador to Kenya, was detained by police in July 2011, when taking over marked banknotes worth €30,000. Liška was caught red-handed in July 2011 when taking the bribe at the office of Novotný who was visiting the US at that time, Sme wrote.
The TASR newswire wrote that Novotný and Liška face three years in prison, while the businessmen face two year sentences.
