The American company Interblue Group, which bought Slovakia's carbon-dioxide emission quotas in 2008, wants to hold negotiations with the Slovak environment ministry about mutual termination of the sales contract by the end of this year, Environment Minister Jozef Medveď announced at a press conference on Thursday, December 3.
Medveď said this should create scope for the closing of a "disgusting episode" in the ministry's history. The negotiations should be held directly as no mediator has been found as yet, TASR wrote.
Slovakia last year sold 15 million tonnes of emissions quotas to Interblue for €5.05 per tonne with the company obliged to pay another €1 per tonne for if the funds were used for environmental projects. Neighbouring countries sold their emissions quotas directly to other countries at considerably higher prices. TASR
