THE TATRAS Beautifying Association has decided to provoke some lively discussion and make people think about the condition of some of the High Tatras’ buildings, calling its project Tatranské haraburdy (Tatra Trash) and displaying mountain buildings on its website that are in particularly poor condition.
One example of a Tatra haraburda featured on the website is the Lomnica Hotel, which is in the centre of Tatranská Lomnica, and has been in a dilapidated condition for more than ten years. Apart from a photo and basic data about each building, the website includes information about the current owner of the building, based on data from the land registry.
“Haraburda represents something unnecessary, something thrown away. However, we don’t want the buildings to become unwanted objects and to be put aside as discarded toys. The buildings form one consistent whole with the surrounding green,” said Jakub Staško of the Tatras Beautifying Association at a press conference, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
According to the www.tatranske-haraburdy.sk website other similar “trash” includes the observation tower Monte Móry, Vila Limba, Vila Marína, the spa house Liečebný dom Limba, Kúpeľný dom (another spa house), the Weszterheim Hotel, as well as others.
Currently, the website features 12 buildings that the association calls cultural monuments and that it says are not being properly cared for by their owners.
The general public can have a say about these buildings in the Tatras in an online poll and Staško believes this could be a form of pressure on the owners to do something about the current state of their buildings.
The Tatranské haraburdy project is not just about deteriorating buildings in the High Tatras, since part of the website also shows cultural monuments in the mountains as well as memorials. The website will gradually add other buildings and issues suggested by site visitors.
