Trade unions representing striking public school teachers on Thursday, November 29, reportedly interrupted a joint meeting to enter negotiations with Prime Minister Robert Fico, the TASR newswire reported.
The Sme daily later wrote that on Thursday evening, Fico invited union leader Pavel Ondek to further negotiations about a potential pay rise for teachers and school employees from January. Toning down his rhetoric, Fico allegedly promised Ondek that he would try to find more money than the five percent offered originally (the unions have been demanding a 10-percent hike). Before the Fico-Ondek meeting, the unions’ had reportedly discussed the possibility of abandoning their 10-percent demand, possibly in favour of a 7.5-percent settlement.
