THE EDUCATTION Ministry plans on changing the existing wage system for teachers in order to attract more young people to the profession.
"I want to support young teachers and keep them here," Education Minister Martin Fronc said.
According to the current system, there are 12 wage groups depending on the number of years an individual teacher has worked in the education sector. Generally young teachers start out with a wage so small that it often discourages even those who studied to become teachers from entering the profession.
The ministry now wants to give teachers higher starting wages and increase the wages regularly every year by almost one percent.
The youngest teachers, aged 23 to 38 years, currently earn around Sk10,920 (€273). As of January 2005 this should change to Sk11,960 (€299) and the year after that to Sk12,070 (€302).
