POLITICIANS and security analysts agree that the threat of a terrorist attack in Slovakia is remote compared to the neighbouring Czech Republic, where police recently tightened security measures in response to a threat identified by local intelligence units.

"Slovakia is definitely less attractive as a terrorist target than the Czech Republic," said Andor Šándor, the former head of the Czech military intelligence service for the Sme daily.

Šándor noted that Slovakia has fewer Jewish monuments than the Czech Republic, and did not play such a clear role in the approval of the UN resolution on ending the Israeli-Lebanese conflict.

According to Šándor, the security risk in Slovakia is also lowered by the fact that the country is withdrawing its military unit from Iraq and that it has no military contingent in Afghanistan.
