THE RULING Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) insisted that it was not going to vote for the proposed EU Constitutional Treaty in parliament and demanded that a referendum be held on the issue.
According to the KDH's vice-chairman, Vladimír Palko, who is also the Slovak Interior Minister, the referendum should be held because the ratification of the document will mean that Slovakia is entering into a union of states.
The representatives of the EU memeber states should sign the EU Constitution in Rome on October 29, and the final deadline for the ratification of the document is November 1, 2006, wrote the daily Hospodárske noviny.
The KDH and the opposition Slovak Communist Party are requesting the referendum; all remaining parliamentary parties support the document being ratified by the MPs.
