AROUND 5,500 Slovaks are living abroad and receiving pensions from Slovakia, according to the Národná Obroda daily.

Most of the ex-pats live in neighbouring countries. The Czech Republic has almost 3,000 Slovak retirees, followed by Hungary with 1,000, and Poland with more than 500. Approximately 200 Slovaks living in the US and Canada also receive a pension from Slovakia.

Last year Slovakia's state-run Social Insurance company paid ex-pat pensioners over Sk300 million (€7.6 million).
