"The highest proportion of households with such difficulties can be found in Banská Bystrica Region. This region has one of the highest unemployment rates, which is inevitably reflected in the financial situation of the households," explained Poštová Banka analyst Eva Sadovská, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

Conversely, Bratislava Region has the lowest proportion of households for which paying current expenditures is a hardship. Even in the capital, however, seven out of ten households admit to having problems. Single-parent families, in particular, as well as retirees, are reported to be having difficulty paying bills.

"Almost 86 percent of households with only one parent living with at least one child have difficulty paying bills. Current expenditures present difficulties also for eight out of ten two-person households with at least one of them retired," said Sadovská, as quoted by TASR. Most of the income of Slovak households goes towards paying bills for housing, water, electricity and gas. These costs make up more than one fifth of all consumer spending of Slovaks.
