Representatives of all three parliamentary opposition parties, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union-Democratic Party (SDKÚ-DS), the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) and the Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH) will meet together on Tuesday, February 24 for the first time this year.
The first meeting was scheduled for January 15 on the initiative of SDKÚ-DS but the Christian Democrats refused to come because of statements made by SMK deputy chair Miklós Duray, the SITA newswire wrote. Duray had pointed to the advantages of self-determination for ethnic minorities on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of a meeting of Hungarian politicians in Komárno who had demanded Hungarian autonomy a year after the Slovak Republic was established.
He mentioned Slovaks and Catalans as positive examples of the right to self-determination. A request for a Hungarian bishop was also voiced at the meeting. At that time, KDH leader Pavol Hrušovský said that the indivisibility and territorial integrity of the Slovak Republic was an issue of national interest, which the party perceived as its priority. For this reason, the party refused to participate in the meeting of opposition parties. SITA
