Three skiers were seriously injured during training for the 1999 World Winter Universiad on down-hill courses in Jasná (Prešov region). The skiers have been hospitalised in Liptovský Mikuláš.

French skier Celine Savin hyper-extended her knee. Italian skier Paolo Cazzaniga suffered a fractured leg below the knee that required immediate surgery. The most seriously injured athlete was Australian Sophia Cape, who suffered a spinal injury as well as torn knee ligaments.

"The injuries were all caused by technical errors committed by the skiers. The slope, as well as all safety measures, are in compliance with the given regulations and are not the reason for the falls," race director Jana Pavlovičová said.
