Almost two and a half years after student Daniel Tupý was murdered in Bratislava, police announced in February that they had charged one man with the killing while two others have been charged with assault. A fourth suspect, a member of a violent organized crime gang in the Lamač suburb of the capital, committed suicide before the arrests were made.
The men have been remanded in custody. “The accused seem to belong to extremist groups,” said Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák (below). “We have enough evidence to charge them, but we are at the beginning of the process, and there’s a lot of work still to be done.”
Shortly after taking office, Kaliňák set up a special team to investigate the Tupý murder.
Tupý, a student of Comenius University in Bratislava, was killed on November 4, 2005 on the embankment of the Danube River in the Petržalka suburb. According to witnesses, the killers were skinheads. A memorial for the victims of racism and fascism was unveiled at the murder site in 2006.
