Regional elections show the door to the far right - Smer loses four governor chairs - Kažimír may become Eurogroup president

These top three stories from Slovakia are the selection of headlines from a weekly overview that subscribers of The Slovak Spectator can read or listen to.

Governors will change in six of the eight regions, which means a disaster for the ruling Smer party that lost four regions in the election: Košice, Prešov, Žilina, and Trnava. The results reflect the increasing displeasure with the politics of the governing Smer and its scandals indicate that the party will have to radically change its attitude.

Unlike the result of Smer,the defeat of extremist Marian Kotleba in Banská Bystrica was expected. In Nitra, the party’s candidate Milan Uhrík also suffered a defeat. ĽSNS fielded 335 candidates for councilors, but only two succeeded - Kotleba in Bystrica and Uhrík in Nitra.

Finance MinisterPeter Kažimír was listed among the most serious candidates for the president of the Eurogroup, the informal group of finance ministers from 19 eurozone countries. The final decision may be known on December 4.
