THE CONFEDERATION of Trade Unions, led by Ivan Saktor, will, for the first time, openly support a political party during the parliamentary elections. The confederation has agreed to favour Smer, the daily SME wrote.
However, Saktor claims that the unions remain apolitical because none of the confederation’s high officials will be on Smer’s candidate list. He argues that cooperation between unions and leftist parties is a common thing in EU countries.
The initiative came from Smer leader Robert Fico.
Labour Minister Ludovit Kanik said that the confederation’s open support for a political party only proved that the unions had been collaborating with Smer and that they have lost their apolitical nature.
