The much-discussed apartment owned by Transport Minister Ján Figeľ (KDH) will be given to charity, Figeľ announced after the government session on Wednesday, October 6, the TASR newswire reported.
“I want to give this apartment to charity, I won't be its long-term owner,” he said, as quoted by TASR. Figeľ was first a tenant in the 156-square-metre apartment in the Staré Mesto (Old Town) district of Bratislava from 2001 to 2003 and later purchased the place for what has been called a token price of Sk54,390 (€1,813) in 2003.
According to the Sme daily, the market value of the apartment was many times higher than that purchase price. Sme wrote that Figeľ had been awarded the flat by the Staré Mesto mayor at that time, Andrej Ďurkovský, who is currently the mayor of the whole city of Bratislava and an MP from KDH.
Figeľ said that gaining possession of the apartment was a legitimate decision that provided stability for his family.
