Transport Minister Vážny says EBRD is ready with €250 million loan for motorways

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will take part in funding the first package of PPP projects for building motorways in Slovakia with a loan reaching €250 million, Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny told the media on April 28, the TASR newswire reported. The bank made the decision to provide the loan for construction of the D1 motorway on April 27.

“I view it as the first of a number of decisive steps, and the fact is that it sends out a trustworthy and clear signal of the success of this project. It’s among the multilateral banks whose role is pivotal in funding these projects,” said Vážny, as quoted by TASR.

It is still uncertain, however, whether the European Investment Bank (EIB), which is supposed to lend Slovakia €1 billion for the PPP projects, will also participate. The bank is expected to make its decision public by the end of April.

“The European Commission has commissioned an independent environmental audit, which is necessary for the EIB’s final stance,” Vážny stated.
