Raising the allowed speed limits at selected sections of Slovak motorways to 160 km/hour is still realistic but it cannot be too expensive, Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny said after a government session on April 14.
“I still have a feeling that we could agree on the 160 km/h limit, but first I have to see the analysis. If it has some economic reason, we’ll try to change the speed limit or find another possibility,” said Vážny to the TASR newswire.
He was speaking in reaction to an audit that disapproved of the idea of changing the speed limits. According to the National Highway Company (NDS), the costs of such a step would be very high. “I still think that this should be possible as a pilot project in Slovakia. On the other hand, we can’t go against safety and norms,” stressed Vážny.
Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák said his ministry would respect any decision taken by the Transport Ministry.
