Igor Kucej, the long-time treasurer of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) is resigning his position and will be temporarily replaced by the current director of the party’s central office, Milan Roman, the TASR newswire reported.
Roman will hold the post only temporarily as the party’s statutes require that its treasurer must be elected by the party’s presidium, the spokesperson for SDKÚ, Michal Lukáč, told TASR. The presidium is expected to meet later this month.
Kucej’s departure has been discussed for some time and Pavol Frešo the newly-elected chair of the party and president of the Bratislava Self-Governing Region, had a plank in his campaign platform calling for replacement of Kucej. Frešo’s rival seeking the chair of SDKÚ, Lucia Žitňanská, also had said she wanted Kucej to leave.
TASR wrote that Kucej was allegedly linked to some scandals within the party, including questions about the party’s past funding that forced former SDKÚ’s chair Mikuláš Dzurinda to withdraw his name from the party’s slate before the June 2010 general election. Kucej was also mentioned eight times in the so-called Gorilla file, the document reportedly describing alleged high-level political corruption in 2005-6, according to TASR.
